I fast because people I know and people I’ve never met are now at risk of losing their basic needs, their homes, their families, their rights, and their lives.
I fast because so much that is precious to me is now under attack: American democracy and freedoms, truth, human decency and human dignity, the beauty and life-sustaining capacity of our planet.
I fast because values I’ve staked my life on are being trampled: respect for others, learning, reverence and awe, commitment to something and someone beyond one’s self, diversity and difference, gentleness, kindness, integrity, justice, humility, self-discipline, self-reflection and self-restraint.
I fast to affirm in my heart, mind and body that I am willing and able to make sacrifices for what others need, and for what I love.
